As of September 15, 2019, up to ten characters can now be scanned on a single day. This does not count for when players are using amiibos for several characters. Only eight characters can be scanned at a time on a single day. Once a character has been scanned, he or she has joined the battle.

The Mii Fighters ( Brawler, Swordfighter, and Gunner) can be unlocked from the Mii Fighter Customization Menu, while other characters (such as the ones from Marvel Comics, Street Fighter, Sonic the Hedgehog, Kirby, Super Mario, Fire Emblem, Pokémon, Touhou Project, Pikmin and Kid Icarus) can be unlocked by the use of their amiibo and scanning their AR Cards using the AR Digits Card Reader mobile app for Android and iOS phones after linking to the Nintendo Switch with a six-digit code.
